The Artist's Life and Legacy

Michelangelo shaped art history through his exceptional skills in painting, sculpture, and architecture. Born in 1475 near Florence, he started drawing as a child. His father sent him to study with painter Domenico Ghirlandaio at age 13. The young artist learned fresco painting techniques that he would use later in his career.

The Medici family noticed his talent and invited him to their palace. Here, Michelangelo studied classical sculpture and met important artists and writers. These early experiences influenced his artistic style. He learned to combine classical beauty with emotional power.

By age 24, Michelangelo created the Pietà, showing Mary holding Jesus. This sculpture made him famous across Italy. Five years later, he carved David from a single block of marble. These works proved his genius with stone. Yet the Pope asked him to paint instead.

Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel ceiling from 1508 to 1512. He stood on scaffolds and painted over 300 figures on the curved ceiling. This work showed his understanding of human anatomy and movement. Artists still study his methods today.

Other artists called him "Il Divino" - the divine one. They saw how he could make stone look like flesh and paint look alive. His art showed the human body with new power and grace. He worked until age 88, leaving behind sculptures, buildings, poems, and paintings that changed art forever.

The Last Judgment: A Masterpiece

In 1536, Pope Paul III asked Michelangelo to paint The Last Judgment. The artist was 61 years old and known as the greatest artist in Rome. He spent five years creating this massive fresco on the Sistine Chapel's altar wall.

The painting shows Jesus deciding the fate of souls. In the top section, Jesus stands as a powerful judge. Mary sits beside him as angels carry objects from his death. Saints and martyrs gather around them, showing their wounds. Each face shows different emotions - hope, fear, peace, or despair.

The middle section shows chaos as souls learn their fate. Angels blow trumpets that wake the dead. Good souls float up to heaven with help from angels. Evil souls fall toward hell as demons pull them down. Michelangelo painted each body with perfect muscle detail, showing his knowledge of anatomy.

At the bottom, bodies rise from graves. The artist painted this scene with green and blue colors to show decay. A boat carries lost souls across the river Styx to hell. The boatman, Charon, hits souls with his oar to make them get out. These details come from both Christian and Greek stories.

Artistic Technique

Michelangelo used special painting methods to make his colors last. He mixed his own paints with rare pigments. He painted on wet plaster one section at a time. This technique bonded the paint to the wall. He built special scaffolds to reach the high wall. Working close to the ceiling, he painted details that people below could still see.

The painting shocked people when it was finished. Some thought the nude figures were inappropriate for a church. In 1564, artists added cloth to cover parts of the bodies. This censorship changed the artwork's original design. From 1980 to 1994, experts cleaned the painting. They removed centuries of dirt and smoke. This cleaning revealed bright colors that had been hidden. Now visitors can see the painting as Michelangelo painted it.
